Aviva Endean from Australia, Henrik Olsson from Sweden. Two distinguished voices in the global society of improvised music. What connects them is that they shared an evening at the bookstore and music venue Rönnells Antikvariat in Stockholm. Now they also share this cd, the second volume in FRIM Records ongoing Split Series, featuring a live solo-performance by each artist. Both Endean and Olsson have developed profiles as significant forces of contemporary music. Olsson can be heard on such household labels as Another Timbre, playing with artists like Andrea Neumann and Tetuzi Akiyama. Endean has toured extensively with performance works, installations and interdisciplinary projects, as well as her two critically acclaimed solo albums. The sounds in these two performances are tactile, earthly, atmospheric, and at times ethereal and frail. On the first track Henrik Olsson uses turntables with metal bowls, aluminum sheets, glass, a bamboo stick and other objects, in a new live-rendition of his composition Common Ground (2020). In Olssons own words this music is about improvisation and memory, and how the human factor is involved in the art of re-building from that very same memory. In the case of Aviva Endeans’ performance, we hear a live reworking of ideas that she used on the album Moths & Stars (Room40, 2022). Using clarinets, plastic pipes, field recordings and electronics, Endean creates an immersive soundscape that effectively juxtaposes acoustic and electronic sound sources, boldly taking the music into different moods and atmospheres. When listening to this album you can feel the presence and openness of a live improvised performance. However, the recording made by John Chantler and mastered by Mell Dettmer brings an intimate closeness and clarity to the sound. This is an album that invites the listener into two distinct sonic worlds – to explore and to get lost in.
