Is it a bird… is it a plane… no, it's a theremin! Whenever people hear the theremin, they can't help but compare its sound to something else: a soprano, a violin, a cello, or countless other instruments. Strangely, it almost never seems to just sound like a theremin. On Bystrova and Jørgensens first album, Air Électrique, they deliberately avoided that comparison by recording only original works for theremin and piano. On this new album, Nuit Exotique, they take the opposite approach. This time, the musicians perform music originally written for other instruments—violin, cello, and voice. In adapting these scores, they worked to stay true to the composers' intentions while allowing the theremin to retain its own character. They shaped each phrase within the instrument’s possibilities, ensuring that the music speaks for itself rather than being reduced to a novelty.
